Press Release: 2019 MCAS/Accountability Results

Highlights of Ayer Shirley Regional School District’s 2019 MCAS and Accountability Results


  • At the state level, from 2018 to 2019 Grades 3-8 show an increase of 1% in meeting or exceeding expectations in English Language Arts and the district shows an increase of 3%.
  • At the state level, from 2018 to 2019 Grades 3-8 show an increase of 1% in meeting or exceeding expectations in mathematics and the district shows an increase of 8%.
  • All schools in the district have a designation of making progress in reaching targets.  Page Hilltop, Lura A. White, and Ayer Shirley Regional Middle School have the designation of making substantial progress toward meeting targets. Ayer Shirley Regional High School is designated as making moderate progress toward meeting targets.
  • The District made significant gains in meeting 2019 targets as measured by the annual criterion referenced target. The increase was 30% from 2018 (39%) to 2019 (69%).
  • The Middle School made significant gains on the 2019 annual criterion referenced target. The increase was 65% from 2018 (15%)  to 2019 (80%). The Middle School percentile ranking increased by 13%.
  • For 2019, Grade 3 English Language Arts exceeded the state average in meeting or exceeding expectations by 7%.  Grade 3 is at 63% while the state is at 56%. Grade 3 math is at the state average of 49%. This increase in scores is a state trend.
  • Grade 5 mathematics exceeded the state average in meeting or exceeding expectations by 4%.
  • Grade 8 English Language arts exceeded the state average in meeting or exceeding expectations by 5%.  
  • Grade 8 mathematics exceeded the state average in meeting or exceeding expectations by 1%.  
  • On the revamped MCAS assessment, Grade 10 exceeded the state average in meeting or exceeding expectations in English Language Arts by 12% and in mathematics by 1%.
  • Grade 10 exceeded the average scaled score on English Language Arts by 7 points at 513.1 compared to the state average scaled score of 506. In mathematics, Grade 10 exceeded the average scaled score by .4.  State average scaled score is 505 and Grade 10 is at 505.4 
  • On the Next Generation Science Assessments, the district’s overall score for Grades 5 & 8 exceeded the state average in meeting or exceeding expectations by 9%.  Specifically, Grade 5 exceeded the state by 6%, while Grade 8 exceeded the state in meeting or exceeding expectations by 13%. 
  • The average growth of all students Grades 3-8 and 10 ranged from 42.1 to 62.5. This is solid growth and the range is average growth to high growth.
